Fruit Sources Cabernet Sauvignon, clone 337 – Bates Ranch, Santa Cruz Mountains, planted in 1970, located at 200 feet above sea level in the southeastern corner of the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation, 10 miles west of Morgan Hill. In this release only the Stagecoach block was used.
Vinification Nearly 3 tons of fruit were fermented in two open-topped 1.75-ton bins, inoculated for primary fermentation (the wine went through ML spontaneously), punched-down for extraction three times per day at the beginning of fermentation then progressively fewer times as the wine neared dryness. The wine was aged in mostly new French oak barrels for 18 months.
Harvest & Tasting Notes 2021 marked our second vintage from this renowned and personally important vineyard (Beth and Steven were married at the top of the vineyard in 2023). 2021, a cooler vintage than 2022 and 2024, has turned out to be one of the finest years in the last 20. Though this wine, replete with dark fruit and spirited acidity, is a touch lean right now, it will blossom in richness and finesse over the next 30 years. This wine is a quintessential example of the structure that makes the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation one of the finest in the world for BDX varieties.
