The Steven Kent Winery’s Single Vineyard Series celebrates spectacular growing sites and talented farmers. Long-term relationships in the Livermore Valley and new associations from the Santa Cruz Mountains continue to yield world-class results.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon – Home Ranch is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Site

The Home Ranch is our oldest site, planted in 1996 on the rocky, river-bottom soil of the now-defunct Arroyo Mocho River. Comprising 2.8 acres of Concannon clone 7 Cabernet Sauvignon (as well as Barbera and Sangiovese), the Home Ranch produces very specific terroir-driven fruit that yields wines of great length and medium+ tannin. Though coming in at just over a hectare in area, the site is divided into three sub-blocks that each produce significantly different wine. The “A” block is 6 rows of Cabernet Sauvignon planted next to the Pepper Tree Horse Farm, and as the name implies, the resulting fruit is often doused with the aromatic oils of Pepper and Eucalyptus trees. Small amounts of this wine are added to the final blend to create the signature Home Ranch Perfume aromas and flavors that make this wine so singular. Block “C” – long rows running from Tesla Road to the back of the property produce classic Livermore Valley Cabernet notes of dark fruit accented by a dusty earth aromatic profile, and Block “B” (short rows in the back of the property whose soil has reduced water-holding capacity) gives over dark fruit with more tannin than the other blocks.

Tasting Notes

Consistent with the 2022 vintage as a whole, this offering of Cabernet Sauvignon – Home Ranch shows very appealing, rich red and dark berry notes and very subtle shadings of oak in the nose. The characteristic herbal/minty notes that accompany this wine in practivally every vintage are also subtly evident as dusty dried sage and woodsy aromas. On entry, the wine show abundant, fleshy fruit framed by beautiful mouth-watering acidity, and the medium tannin of the wine begins to bloom in the mid-palate and carries through on a very long finish. This wine reminds me of the 2012 vintage in its abundance of fruit and roundness of structure. It took years for that vintage to blossom into the broad-shouldered wines it became. I have high hopes that a similar aging arc will reveal that same trajectory from the 2022 wines.
