NV Steven Kent BDX Collection "Timpani" 750ml

The BDX Collection is a set of mostly Bordeaux-varietal blends released each year and that are meant to be relatively accessible early in their lives. These wines are released first to members of our wine club.

Timpani is a 95% Cabernet Sauvignon blend made from fruit from the Lencioni and Home Ranch Vineyards in the Livermore Valley and the Stagecoach block of the Bates Ranch Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It also contains 5% Cabernet Franc from Livermore Valley’s Ghielmetti Vineyard.

Fruit Sources

Typically, we harvest fruit from a selection of world-class vineyards in the Livermore Valley and the Santa Cruz Mountains for specific single-vineyard releases or specifically for appellation blends such as The Premier Cabernet Sauvignon. In fewer cases, our production team has wines available that work beautifully in blends that embody a concept or that contain wines that were treated in a similar winemaking fashion. The latter is the case with Timpani.

Vinification

Throughout the course of a wine’s life in barrel, it goes through a multitude of changes based upon the length of time in barrel or the percentage of new oak used. Because of evaporation, barrels need to be topped periodically to prevent oxidation issues. Topping wine is often stored in stainless-steel drums, and the inclusion of this acid-driven, non-wooded wine adds a sense of freshness and leanness to the blend. Timpani, which is a set of drums that produce brighter tones than the darker Bass drum, shows – dramatically – the effects of steel aging.

Winemaker Notes

In the nose, Timpani is dominated by aromas of dark and red berry and dried herbs; the very small amount of new-ish barrel plays an appropriately small role. In the mouth, flavors of dark fruit and dried sage mirror its aromas. As with most of our wines, Timpani is unencumbered by significant barrel-derived organoleptics. Structurally, the wine shows delicious tension, is somewhat tight, and finishes very long with moderate tannin and acidity. This is a wine that would pair beautifully with white meats, chicken, and pasta dishes. Drink from 2024 – 2030.
