Fruit Sources
Syrah – Zayante Vineyard, planted in 1989 outside the town of Felton in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Mourvèdre – from Lodi.

Vinification
Harvested September 18 – October 13^th each vineyard block was fermented in open-topped 1.75-ton bins and inoculated for primary fermentation with F83 and D254 yeast strains. Punched-down 2-3 times per day for extraction, the wines were pressed off after more than three weeks of maceration. They were then aged in neutral French oak barrels to limit the flavors and aromas of wood. After 14 months in oak, each barrel was evaluated for inclusion in the final assemblage. The final blend was made and rebarreled for another four months.

Tasting Notes
As is typical of the Steven Kent style, this blend (two-thirds of the famous GSM assemblages) eschews obvious bigness for more complex pleasures. Syrah adds dark berry fruit and a round viscosity in the mid-palate while the earthy Mourvèdre contributes redder fruit notes, leather, and angular tannin. Framed by a lengthy acid-driven finish, the abundant fruit is carried to delicious effect in this offering. I think of lamb and white bean stews when drinking this wine, and while fruit will recede over time, this wine will show stunning complexity and deliciousness, stored properly, for well over 10 years.

The wine is named I Knew We Should as an affirmation that no matter how wonderful each wine was separately (and our original plan was to release them as 100% offerings), together, they created a synergy that made them more delicious and more profound and more representative of the Steven Kent style and ethos.
